tokyo musings

I fell in love with Tokyo, and its booming, frenetic energy that I had not seen anywhere in the world. But above all, I fell in love with Japanese women - their unstated elegance, beauty, mystery. So many different faces, and so many different stories to tell.

This series focuses on people - women and girls - but also takes advantage of Tokyo’s incredible architecture and intrinsic geometry, shapes and patterns. It also compares and contrasts scenes taken during the day, and scenes at night, filled with neon lights, where subjects become silhouettes that escape the frame. Sun umbrellas at day turn into rain umbrellas at night, and the crowd seems to move at a different pace when the sun is out - almost rushing from inside their world, barely aware of the camera in front of them.

This series is my love song for Tokyo, shot during summer 2014.
